In 1999, Siemens` semiconductor business was spun off into a new company called Infineon Technologies. The Electromechanical Components business unit has been transformed into a legally independent company: Siemens Electromechanical Components GmbH & Co. The company paid a total of approximately $1.6 billion, including approximately $800 million in the United States and Germany. It was the biggest bribery penalty in history at the time. The company also had to spend $1 billion to establish and fund new internal compliance agreements.  Siemens pleaded guilty to violating the accounting requirements of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act; the parent company pleaded not guilty to bribes (unlike its subsidiaries in Bangladesh and Venezuela). In March 2007, a member of the board of directors of Siemens was provisionally arrested and accused of illegally financing a pro-business workers` association in competition with IG Metall. He was released on bail. The offices of the union and Siemens were raided. Siemens denies any wrongdoing.
 In April, Siemens` Fixed Networks, Mobile Networks and Carrier Services divisions merged with Nokia`s Network Business Group in a 50/50 joint venture to form a fixed and mobile communications company called Nokia Siemens Networks. Nokia delayed the merger due to corruption investigations against Siemens.  In October 2007, a Munich court found that the company had bribed officials in Libya, Russia, and Nigeria in exchange for awarding the contract; Four former Nigerian communications ministers were among the recipients of the payments. The company admitted to paying the bribes and agreed to pay a fine of €201 million. In December 2007, the Nigerian government terminated a contract with Siemens due to corruption results.   Werner von Siemens described a dynamo without permanent magnets in 1867. A similar system was also invented independently by Ányos Jedlik and Charles Wheatstone, but Siemens was the first company to build such devices. In 1881, a Siemens alternating current generator powered by a water mill was used to power the world`s first electric street lighting in the city of Godalming, UK. The company continued to grow, diversifying into electric trains and light bulbs. In 1885, Siemens sold one of its generators to George Westinghouse, allowing Westinghouse to experiment with AC networks in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Siemens exploited forced labor of women in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. The factory was located opposite the camp.
